The Cabin Is the Canvas. Everything Else Is Engineering.
The market for private jet interiors at the UHNW level operates on a fundamental distinction that most people outside it never encounter: the difference between a completion centre refurbishment and a genuinely bespoke interior commission. The former takes an existing cabin layout and re-skins it with new materials — better leather, updated trim, higher-specification entertainment systems. The latter begins with an empty shell and builds a living environment that has never existed before.
Genuinely bespoke interior jet design is done by a very small number of studios globally. Winch Design, Studio F. A. Porsche, and a handful of independent aviation interior architects maintain the specialised knowledge of FAA and EASA airworthiness certification requirements that constrain every material choice and structural modification. The design process — from concept brief to airworthiness sign-off — typically takes 18 to 36 months and produces an interior that is as much an act of design authorship as it is an engineering exercise.
The Material Constraint
The defining challenge of aircraft interior design is the certification constraint. Every material used in a pressurised aircraft interior — every fabric, every leather, every wood veneer, every panel laminate — must meet specific FAR 25 flammability standards. This eliminates most of what a principal would choose if they were specifying a superyacht or a private residence. The design process at the top end is therefore an exercise in sourcing materials that are simultaneously compliant, aesthetically exceptional, and capable of meeting the principal’s brief.
Weight is the second constraint. In an ultra-long-range aircraft, every kilogram of interior weight directly translates to reduced range or increased fuel burn. The principal who wants Calacatta marble throughout the main cabin is having a conversation with physics as much as with their designer.
