Anyone Can Track Your Aircraft. Here Is What You Can Actually Do About It.

Why Your Charter Quote Changed After You Accepted It

If someone knows the registration of an aircraft you use regularly, they can build a detailed picture of your movements without leaving their desk. This has been true for years and is not widely understood by the people most affected by it.

How the exposure works

Aircraft transmit position, altitude and identity continuously so that air traffic control and other aircraft can see them. That transmission is not encrypted. A global network of volunteer receivers collects it and several public platforms aggregate and publish it, in most cases free of charge.

Registration data linking a tail number to an owning entity is also public in most jurisdictions. Combine the two and you have a searchable movement history attached to a name.

For principals whose travel patterns carry commercial or personal sensitivity, this is a genuine operational issue rather than a matter of preference.

What blocking programmes do

Several mechanisms exist to suppress display of specific aircraft on public platforms, and aircraft can in some cases be issued alternative identifiers that rotate.

These work reasonably well against the casual observer. Someone searching a tail number on a consumer app will not find it.

What they do not do

They do not remove the transmission. The signal is still broadcast and still received by anyone with equipment, which costs very little. Enthusiast communities maintain their own datasets outside the public platforms, and blocked aircraft frequently appear in them.

They also do not address the human layer, which is where most real exposure originates. Handling agents, catering suppliers, fuel providers, ground transport and airport staff all know an aircraft has arrived and who was on it. That information travels through conversation, not through data feeds, and no technical measure touches it.

The measures that make a material difference

Vary the aircraft. A principal who charters different aircraft has no consistent tail number to track. This is a structural advantage of charter over ownership that is rarely discussed and, for some clients, is the deciding factor.

Reduce the chain. Every intermediary between you and the operator is another set of records and another group of people who know. Ask how many parties touch the booking.

Book through an entity. Where appropriate and lawful, the manifest and the contract need not carry an individual’s name. This is frequently possible and rarely offered unprompted.

Choose facilities deliberately. Handling arrangements vary considerably in how much they observe and how much they say. This is a question of relationships rather than of published standards.

The honest position

Complete invisibility is not available. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

What is available is meaningful reduction in exposure through a small number of deliberate choices, most of which are made at the planning stage rather than afterwards. The clients who manage this well decided how they wanted to travel before they needed to, and have not had to think about it since.
