Commissioning a Bespoke Car: The UHNW Principal’s Guide

Concours d’Elegance: Entering and Winning for UHNW Collectors

Why Commission Rather Than Configure?

Every major luxury automobile manufacturer now offers a configuration experience — a seemingly infinite palette of colours, materials, and options. But configuration is not commissioning. A configured vehicle, however personalised, is still drawn from existing components and constrained by production-line possibilities. A commissioned vehicle begins from a different premise: the manufacturer’s brief is to realise the client’s vision, not to guide them through pre-determined choices.

For UHNW principals who have exhausted what standard personalisation can offer, a bespoke commission is the logical next step — and a fundamentally different relationship with the manufacturer.

Identifying the Right Partner

Not all manufacturers are equally equipped for genuine bespoke commissions. Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Bugatti, Pagani, and the specialist coachbuilding houses (Touring, Pininfarina, Zagato) each have distinct capabilities and creative cultures. The right partner depends on the type of vehicle desired, the level of structural modification that may be required, and the nature of the creative relationship the principal wants.

An advisor with established manufacturer relationships can facilitate introductions at the right level — not the sales team, but the design and engineering leadership who will actually shape the commission — and can assess whether a manufacturer’s current capacity allows for genuine creative engagement.

Developing and Communicating the Brief

The quality of the outcome is largely determined by the quality of the brief. A vague instruction to “make it special” produces an elaborate standard vehicle. A precise, research-supported brief — with reference images, material samples, historical references, and clear articulation of the principal’s intent — enables the manufacturer’s team to engage meaningfully and produce something genuinely new.

The brief should address every aspect of the vehicle: exterior proportions and finish, interior materials and layout, mechanical specification, acoustic character, fragrance, and the experience of ownership over time. The most sophisticated commissions also address how the vehicle will be used — track days, touring, display — because purpose shapes every engineering decision.

Managing the Process

A bespoke commission typically involves multiple approval stages, design reviews, material sign-off sessions, and prototype evaluations. These are best managed by someone with both automotive knowledge and project management experience who can represent the principal’s interests throughout the build without requiring the principal’s constant involvement.

Key milestones — exterior clay model approval, interior mock-up review, final specification freeze — should be attended in person where possible, as these are the moments when the commission’s character is definitively established.

Documentation and Provenance

A significant bespoke commission generates a body of documentation — design sketches, specification sheets, material samples, build photography — that becomes part of the vehicle’s permanent record. This documentation should be archived formally and stored separately from the vehicle, as it constitutes a significant part of the commission’s long-term value and cultural significance.
