The Structural Decision That Defines Generational Wealth

For principals managing assets above $100 million, the family office is no longer optional — it is the operating system of wealth. The critical question is not whether to establish one, but which model serves the family’s complexity, privacy requirements, and long-term governance ambitions.

The Single Family Office: Control at a Premium

The SFO exists to serve one family exclusively. Staff loyalty, investment discretion, and confidentiality are absolute. The principal retains complete authority over hiring, strategy, and reporting cadence. There are no competing client interests, no shared infrastructure, and no information leakage to co-investors.

The trade-off is cost. A credibly staffed SFO requires a minimum of $150,000–$250,000 in annual operating costs at the lean end, and considerably more once investment professionals, legal counsel, and technology infrastructure are factored in. Most advisors suggest a minimum asset base of $150–200 million to justify the overhead on a cost-per-managed-dollar basis.

The Multi-Family Office: Scale Without Sacrifice

The MFO aggregates operational infrastructure across multiple client families, delivering institutional-grade services at shared cost. Elite MFOs provide investment management, tax planning, concierge services, and philanthropy administration — at a fraction of the standalone operating cost.

The risk is alignment. In an MFO, the principal is one client among several. Investment mandates may reflect the preferences of the majority. Confidentiality — while contractually protected — is structurally more complex than in a dedicated office. Principals should interrogate conflict-of-interest policies and co-investment disclosure protocols before committing.

Governance Considerations by Wealth Tier

For principals between $50–150 million, a high-quality MFO typically delivers superior risk-adjusted service value. Between $150–500 million, a hybrid model — outsourced investment management through an MFO combined with a dedicated family office administrator — often represents the optimal balance. Above $500 million, and certainly above $1 billion, the SFO becomes not merely justifiable but strategically necessary given the complexity of cross-border structures, direct investments, and operating entities.

What the Transition Looks Like

Principals graduating from an MFO to an SFO should expect an 18–24 month transition period. The CIO hire is the most consequential decision — a weak appointment at this level propagates through every subsequent investment and staffing choice. Legal structure, domicile selection, and technology platform all follow the governance framework, not precede it.
