The Multi-Family Office Model: What UHNW Principals Need to Know

Single Family Office vs Multi-Family Office: Which Structure Serves UHNW Principals Best?

Why Technology Defines Family Office Quality

A family office that cannot aggregate assets across all custodians, asset classes, and jurisdictions into a single consolidated view is not providing a principal with the oversight they need. Technology is not a back-office concern; it is the operational foundation of everything the family office does. Principals who tolerate fragmented reporting — an Excel spreadsheet from one custodian, a PDF from another, a verbal update from their alternatives manager — are operating without the visibility their wealth requires.

Portfolio Aggregation

Best-in-class family offices use institutional aggregation platforms — Addepar, BlackDiamond, Orion, or proprietary builds for the largest operations — that consolidate custody data, private equity capital account statements, real estate valuations, and direct holdings into a single performance dashboard. The platform should reconcile positions automatically, handle multi-currency portfolios, and produce consolidated net worth statements that incorporate all asset classes, not just liquid holdings.

Reporting Standards

Principals should set reporting standards at the outset of any family office relationship. Monthly consolidated performance reporting, quarterly attribution analysis, and annual portfolio review with a strategic asset allocation assessment are the baseline. Reporting should distinguish between time-weighted and money-weighted returns, account for capital calls and distributions, and present performance net of all fees. Benchmarking should be appropriate to the portfolio’s composition — a blended benchmark, not a single index.

Cybersecurity Infrastructure

Family offices are high-value targets for cybercriminals, including sophisticated state-sponsored actors. Principals should expect their family office to operate with enterprise-grade cybersecurity: multi-factor authentication for all systems, end-to-end encrypted communication for sensitive matters, regular penetration testing, and staff training on social engineering and spear-phishing — which remains the primary attack vector for UHNW households. Incident response protocols should be documented and tested.

Data Governance

Who has access to what data, under what circumstances, is a governance question that most family offices do not address systematically. Principals should expect a documented data access policy, segregated credentials for different staff roles, and a clear protocol for what happens to data when staff depart. The family office’s technology infrastructure should be viewed as part of the principal’s overall information security posture.
