The Winter Migration
Each autumn, much of the world’s superyacht fleet leaves the Mediterranean and crosses to the Caribbean for the winter season. By December, anchorages from the British Virgin Islands to St Barths and the Grenadines host many of the finest charter yachts afloat. The festive fortnight around Christmas and New Year is the most sought-after period of the entire charter calendar.
Why November Is Late
The best yachts for the holiday weeks are often booked many months ahead, sometimes by repeat clients who reserve the same yacht year after year. By early November, the remaining choices narrow quickly. Yachts with standout crews, larger guest capacity or particular toys go first. Many charters over the holidays also carry minimum durations, which makes short trips harder to place.
Where to Cruise
- St Barths and St Martin. The social centre of New Year. Gustavia’s harbour is crowded and berths are prized, so many yachts anchor off.
- British Virgin Islands. Short hops between sheltered islands, ideal for families with younger children.
- The Grenadines. Quieter, more remote, with exceptional reefs around the Tobago Cays.
- The Bahamas. Shallow turquoise waters and easy flight access from the US East Coast.
How to Still Secure the Right Yacht
- Decide on dates and guest count now. Flexibility on embarkation day can open options.
- Consider a different base. If St Barths is full, starting in Antigua or St Martin and cruising in can still deliver New Year at anchor.
- Look past the brochure size. A slightly smaller yacht with an outstanding captain and chef often delivers a better week.
- Coordinate the flight early. Private jet slots into small Caribbean airports also tighten over the holidays.
- Budget for the full cost. Charter fee plus provisioning allowance, taxes where applicable, and crew gratuity.
Charter, Not Ownership
For many families, the Caribbean winter is the clearest case for charter over ownership. An owned yacht must be repositioned across the Atlantic, crewed all year and maintained for a few weeks of use. A charter delivers the right yacht in the right place, crewed and provisioned, without the logistics.
The Takeaway
If your family wants to spend the holidays at sea in the Caribbean, the decision window is now. Call early, stay flexible on bases, and judge yachts by crew quality, not just length.
